Matthew Pigg's briefing this morning is short, because the day is not. Clean up after last night's storm. Tidy the worksite where it needs it. Get the tents opened up and airing out, then start setting up for the day. Participants start arriving this afternoon.
That is the soft opening, and the area is almost ready for it. Getting to almost took a heavy day yesterday from the crew that is here, clawing back the couple of days lost when materials ran late.
The materials story is the story of this Jamboree for Skilled Trades. The bill of materials was ready to go, but this program is something the Jamboree has never done before: a working construction site run as a program area, instead of outside administrators running a site and dealing with their own vendors. Other people ordered the crew's stock, so the crew has spent the week adapting to what actually showed up.
Five people including the director have carried the setup portion. That changes today. The staff on the ground right now are Jamboree staff, the people Matt recruited as program staff for Skilled Trades in the Crossroads area. As participants arrive, contingents bring extra adults signed up as council contingent staff, and several of those come in today as day help.
The crew has also been spending itself on other people's problems all week. Because these are people who can turn tools and lumber into whatever is needed, Skilled Trades has already helped several other program areas, including the OA Legacy Experience and special stage pieces for the opening show.
Today the help comes home. Tents open, worksite squared away, and the first Scouts walk in.
