Every wire that gets pulled at Skilled Trades runs through one guy. Brian Hockings is the only electrician on the crew, and he signed up the simplest way there is: he saw the ask and said yes.
Matt Pigg had put a question out on a Scouting Facebook page, looking for help at this year's Jamboree. Brian saw it, answered it, and told Matt he was an electrician and would be glad to pitch in. That was the whole recruiting process. Now he's the one running the electrical side of the build.
What he's teaching Scouts is not a trade-school lecture. It's the stuff that actually comes up when you own a place. How to fix things around the house. How to run simple wiring in a room, install outlets and switches, do a little troubleshooting. When you can handle a job yourself, and when you're smarter to hire it out.
The bunk house gives that teaching something real to land on. The electrical plan is not fully drawn up yet, but Brian already knows the shape of it: a few lights, maybe a ceiling fan, and some outlets set around the bunks. Convenience outlets, mostly, for whenever a Scout needs to plug something in.
The part he grins about is the feed. The trailer ends up with a cord that plugs into the project power on site, wired like a typical RV hookup. Enough power that if the crew decided to, a Scout could run an air conditioner inside the bunk house. On a July build in the mountains, that lands.
Back home, Brian is an electrician at Northern Illinois University, out of a small town called Sandwich. Here, he's the whole electrical department. One guy, every circuit, and a line of Scouts learning to do it themselves.
